Working Through the Heat: Summer Care and Heat Stress in Livestock Guardian Dogs


Livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) are working animals, and unlike most companion dogs, their job does not stop when temperatures climb. During the summer months, LGDs may spend nearly all their time outdoors with livestock, often working through periods of extreme heat and humidity. While these dogs are generally hardy and can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions, they are not immune to heat stress or heat stroke.


For producers, summer management should involve more than simply making sure a stock tank contains water. Shade, airflow, hydration, workload, body condition, coat condition, acclimatization, age, health, and the individual dog's behavior can all influence its ability to cope with heat. Understanding what is normal for your dogs and recognizing when normal summer panting is progressing toward a medical emergency can save a dog's life.


How Dogs Keep Themselves Cool

Dogs regulate body temperature differently than people. Because they have relatively few functional sweat glands, they rely heavily on panting and evaporation from the respiratory tract to dissipate excess body heat. Panting moves air across moist surfaces in the mouth and respiratory system, allowing heat to leave the body through evaporation. This system can work well under appropriate conditions, but its effectiveness decreases as environmental temperature and humidity increase.


High humidity is particularly important. Texas A&M veterinary specialists note that increasing humidity reduces evaporation and therefore reduces a dog's ability to dissipate heat through panting. When environmental conditions, physical activity, or both produce heat faster than the dog can eliminate it, body temperature begins to rise.


For an LGD, heat production does not come only from the weather. Walking fence lines, responding to predators, interacting with livestock, running, barking, and other normal working behaviors generate additional metabolic heat. A hot night can therefore be just as important as a hot afternoon. LGDs are often most active from dusk through early morning when predator activity increases. When nighttime temperatures remain high, dogs may have fewer opportunities to dissipate accumulated body heat before beginning another period of activity.


Heat Stress vs. Heat Stroke

It is useful for producers to think about heat-related illness as progression rather than waiting for a dog to suddenly "have heat stroke." Heat stress, or heat exhaustion, occurs when a dog is becoming overheated and its normal cooling mechanisms struggle to keep pace. A dog may still be alert and responsive, but its behavior begins to change.


Heat stroke occurs when hyperthermia becomes severe enough to cause systemic illness and tissue damage. At this point, the problem is no longer simply that the dog is hot. Heat can begin damaging proteins, cells, the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, liver, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and the body's normal blood-clotting mechanisms.


Heat stroke is a life-threatening veterinary emergency. Texas A&M veterinary specialists report that severe hyperthermia can result in shock, dehydration, abnormal clotting, neurologic abnormalities, organ dysfunction, seizures, and death.


Know Your Dog's Normal Summer Behavior

One of the most useful management tools a producer has is knowing what is normal for each LGD. Panting by itself does not necessarily mean a dog is experiencing heat stroke. Panting is a normal cooling mechanism. A working LGD resting in the shade and panting on a hot afternoon may simply be regulating its body temperature.


Concern should increase when panting becomes unusually intense or persistent, or is accompanied by changes in behavior, posture, movement, gum color, gastrointestinal signs, or mental status. Early signs that an LGD may be struggling with the heat can include:

  • Heavy or persistent panting

  • Increased drooling

  • Seeking shade, water, wet ground, or another cool location

  • Reduced activity or reluctance to move

  • Lying down more than usual

  • Weakness or unusual fatigue

  • Increased thirst

  • Rapid breathing or heart rate

  • Anxiety or restlessness

  • Difficulty settling down and cooling off

These signs are a warning to stop unnecessary activity and begin cooling the dog while closely monitoring its condition.


Warning Signs of Heat Stroke

As heat-related illness progresses, clinical signs become much more serious. Watch for:

  • Extreme or uncontrollable panting

  • Excessive drooling

  • Weakness or inability to stand normally

  • Stumbling, wobbling, or loss of coordination

  • Confusion or disorientation

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea, which may become bloody

  • Bright red, dark red, purple, pale, or abnormal-looking gums

  • Respiratory distress

  • Collapse

  • Tremors or seizures

  • Reduced responsiveness or loss of consciousness

Any LGD displaying neurologic signs, collapse, respiratory distress, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, abnormal gum color, seizures, or altered consciousness should be considered an emergency. Do not wait to see whether the dog improves on its own. Contact a veterinarian immediately.


Why Some Dogs May Be at Greater Risk

Not every dog handles heat in the same way. A large study published in Scientific Reports evaluated more than 900,000 dogs and identified several factors associated with increased risk of heat-related illness. Dogs weighing more than 50 kg (110 pounds) had increased risk, as did dogs weighing above the average for their breed and sex. Increasing age and certain physical characteristics were also associated with greater risk.


This is relevant to LGD owners because many guardian breeds are large-bodied dogs. Body condition matters as well. Excess body fat provides insulation and can make heat dissipation more difficult. Maintaining an appropriate body condition is therefore part of summer heat management, not simply a nutritional consideration. Other factors that may increase risk include:

  • Older age

  • Obesity or excessive body condition

  • Cardiovascular or respiratory disease

  • Poor physical conditioning

  • Lack of acclimatization to hot weather

  • Recent illness

  • Dehydration

  • High levels of physical activity

  • Hot, humid conditions

  • Limited ventilation or airflow

Producers should monitor older dogs and dogs with known health problems particularly closely during extreme weather.


Acclimatization Matters

A dog accustomed to working through a Texas summer is not physiologically identical to a dog suddenly exposed to high temperatures. Research and veterinary guidance identify lack of acclimatization as an important heat-illness risk. This becomes especially important during sudden early-season heat waves or when moving a dog from a cooler region into a much hotter climate.


Newly purchased LGDs may therefore require additional monitoring during their first weeks on a ranch. Do not assume that because a dog belongs to a traditional livestock guardian breed it is automatically prepared for extreme heat. Genetics are only one part of the equation. Environment, conditioning, health, body condition, management, and acclimatization matter too.


Water Is the First Line of Defense

Working LGDs should have continuous access to clean, fresh drinking water. During hot weather, check water sources more frequently than you would during cooler months. Stock tanks, automatic waterers, buckets, and other sources can become empty, malfunction, become contaminated, or become inaccessible when livestock crowd around them.


Where practical, providing more than one water location gives a dog additional options and provides redundancy if one source fails. Also consider where the water is located. A water source sitting in full sun can become extremely warm. Placing a dog-accessible water source in or near shade can encourage drinking and provide the dog with a place to rest while cooling. Some LGDs also voluntarily stand or lie in stock tanks, ponds, troughs, or shallow pools. Where safe and practical, access to water for cooling can be useful, but drinking water should remain clean and readily available.


Shade Has to Work Throughout the Day

Simply having a tree, shed, doghouse, trailer, or other structure in the pasture does not necessarily mean adequate shade is available. The sun moves. Evaluate shade during the hottest portion of the afternoon, not just when livestock are checked in the morning.

Good summer shade should provide enough room for the dog to lie comfortably, allow airflow, and preferably offer access to cooler ground. Trees, open-sided sheds, shade cloth structures, barns, or other well-ventilated structures can work well. A poorly ventilated enclosed doghouse sitting in direct sunlight may actually trap heat and should not automatically be considered adequate summer shelter.


Remember that LGDs generally choose locations based on their livestock and perceived threats. Whenever possible, locate shade where the dog can remain close enough to its animals to feel comfortable using it.


Air Movement Makes a Difference

Airflow improves evaporative cooling. This is particularly important when humidity is high. Where electricity is available, fans in barns, kennels, loafing sheds, or other resting areas can provide additional cooling. For pasture dogs, natural ventilation becomes important. A shaded area with open sides and good airflow is generally more useful during extreme summer heat than a small, enclosed structure with little ventilation.


What About Their Heavy Coat?

It can be tempting to look at a heavily coated LGD in July and assume shaving the dog will make it cooler. A dog's coat is part of its natural insulation system and also protects the skin from solar radiation. Routine shaving of double-coated LGDs is generally not the first solution for managing summer heat. Instead, concentrate on coat maintenance.


Regular grooming can remove loose undercoat, mats, dirt, seeds, and debris that interfere with normal airflow through the coat. Matting can also trap moisture against the skin and contribute to dermatologic problems. Severely matted dogs may require clipping for health or welfare reasons, but producers should discuss extensive coat removal with their veterinarian or experienced professional rather than automatically shaving LGDs each summer.


Change Management During Extreme Heat

LGDs cannot always choose when they work. A predator moving through the pasture at 2:00 a.m. may trigger intense activity regardless of how hot the previous afternoon was. Producers can, however, reduce the unnecessary workload placed on dogs during periods of extreme heat. When possible:

  • Conduct routine handling and veterinary work during cooler portions of the day.

  • Avoid unnecessary chasing, restraint, transport, or strenuous activity during peak heat.

  • Schedule training sessions for early morning or evening.

  • Make sure dogs have access to water before and after handling.

  • Provide shaded recovery areas.

  • Check dogs more frequently during heat waves.

  • Pay special attention after unusually active nights or predator events.

Dogs confined temporarily in kennels, trailers, traps, transport crates, or vehicles require particular attention because confinement can drastically reduce airflow and prevent the dog from moving to a cooler location. Never leave an LGD unattended in a parked vehicle.


If You Think Your LGD Is Overheating

If a dog shows signs of significant heat stress:


1. Stop activity.

Move the dog away from direct sunlight and into a shaded, well-ventilated or air-conditioned area if possible.


2. Begin cooling.

Apply water to the dog's body and increase air movement with a fan when available. Evaporative cooling, wetting the dog while moving air across the body, is an effective field cooling method.


3. Offer drinking water if the dog is conscious and able to drink normally.

Do not force water into the mouth of a confused, collapsed, seizing, or poorly responsive dog.


4. Contact your veterinarian.

If heat stroke is suspected, do not delay veterinary evaluation simply because the dog appears better after initial cooling.


5. Continue cooling while arranging transport according to your veterinarian's instructions.

Use the vehicle's air conditioning during transportation whenever possible.


A Note About Cooling Advice

Recommendations concerning water temperature have changed as additional research has become available. Some traditional veterinary guidance, including Texas A&M educational materials, has cautioned against ice baths or extreme cooling. More recent peer-reviewed research on canine heat-related illness emphasizes that rapid cooling is critical and supports effective conductive or evaporative cooling methods.


For ranch situations, thoroughly wetting the dog and using strong air movement is a practical approach while contacting a veterinarian. Avoid delaying cooling while searching for specialized equipment. One important point remains consistent across the literature:

The sooner you reduce excessive body heat, the better the dog's chances of avoiding serious complications.


Don't Rely on Temperature Alone

Normal canine body temperature is generally around 100–102.5°F, although individual and situational variation occurs. A substantially elevated temperature combined with compatible clinical signs is concerning, but producers should not wait for a thermometer reading before responding to a dog that is collapsing, disoriented, vomiting, having difficulty breathing, or showing other serious signs.


Likewise, a dog's temperature may already be declining by the time it reaches a veterinary clinic even though internal organ damage has occurred. Clinical condition matters.


Heat Stroke Doesn't Always End When the Dog Cools Down

This is one of the most important points for producers to understand. A dog that was severely overheated may appear much better after being cooled, but complications can continue to develop internally. Heat-related injury can affect the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, brain, cardiovascular system, and coagulation system.


That is why suspected heat stroke warrants veterinary evaluation even when initial cooling appears successful. In a large UK veterinary study, heat-related illness had an overall event fatality rate of approximately 14%. Severe cases were considerably more dangerous. Early recognition and intervention matter.


Build Heat Checks Into Your Summer Routine

Summer heat management works best when it becomes part of normal ranch management rather than something done only after a dog becomes sick. When checking livestock during hot weather, take an extra minute to check the LGDs. Look at:

Water — Is clean drinking water available and accessible?

Shade — Is usable shade available right now?

Airflow — Can the dog rest somewhere with adequate ventilation?

Dog — Is its behavior normal? Is it moving normally? Is panting appropriate for the conditions?

Body condition — Is the dog carrying unnecessary weight?

Coat — Is the coat clean and free of excessive mats or packed undercoat?

Workload — Has the dog been unusually active?

Weather — Are high humidity, unusually warm nighttime temperatures, or extreme heat increasing today's risk?

These observations take very little time but can identify problems before they become emergencies.


The Bottom Line

LGDs are remarkably adaptable working dogs, but toughness should never be confused with immunity to heat. The goal of summer management is not to prevent an LGD from working. It is to give the dog the resources it needs to regulate its body temperature while continuing to perform its job safely.


Adequate water, functional shade, airflow, appropriate body condition, good coat maintenance, acclimatization, reduced unnecessary activity during extreme heat, and frequent observation all contribute to safer summer management. Most importantly, know your dogs. A producer who understands how each LGD normally behaves during hot weather is much more likely to notice when something has changed.


Heavy panting that does not resolve, unusual weakness, stumbling, vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal gum color, confusion, collapse, or seizures are not signs that a working dog simply needs to "tough it out." They may mean it needs immediate help. If you suspect heat stroke, begin cooling and contact your veterinarian immediately.


Research Spotlight: Heat-Related Illness Is Preventable, but It Can Be Fatal

A 2020 study published in Scientific Reports reviewed veterinary records from more than 900,000 dogs. Researchers identified 395 confirmed heat-related illness events and reported an overall fatality rate of approximately 14.2%. Large body size, higher-than-average bodyweight for breed and sex, increasing age, and certain breed and skull characteristics were associated with greater risk.


Subsequent research has emphasized another important point: cooling should begin as early as possible. A 2023 study examining 623 canine heat-related illness events found that only about 22% of dogs with recorded cooling had been cooled before arriving for veterinary treatment. The authors emphasized the importance of beginning effective cooling before or during transport rather than delaying cooling until arrival at a veterinary clinic. For LGD owners, the practical message is simple: prevention is best, early recognition is critical, and suspected heat stroke requires immediate action.
